Kids, Work and Taking Time Off (A Passover Story)

Kids, Work and Taking Time Off (A Passover Story)

**Heads up, you can highlight any sentence in this post and tweet it out.**

Every year as we lead up to the holiday of Passover I feel my heart rate speed up. This is the single most dreaded holiday of the year for me.

Every observant Jewish woman is burdened with the yolk of the Passover preparation and its more work than you could ever imagine (Spring cleaning can’t touch Passover cleaning!).

Add to that running a business and a household of six and it’s enough to make you scream lose it.

We all have months of utter insanity whether it be the workload or personal stuff going on that’s taking you away from work.

This year in particular I had the pleasure of getting ready for Passover and getting ready for my nephew’s bar mitzvah. That meant spending a lot of time with family from abroad. Trust me, I loved every minute of the family time but it did take me away from my work – a lot.

So much in fact that I barely got any work done. And you know what?

I’m thrilled.

In every culture, in every religion there are holidays that we observe.  These are the times of the year that we need to disconnect from the internet and reconnect with our families, with ourselves.

Up until this year I wasn’t good about scheduling time off ahead of Passover. I just didn’t think I had the luxury.

As a result I had way too much on my plate and the stress was all consuming. I became irritable with my husband and children and was desperate for 8 hours of sleep.

Moral of the story?

When you’re gearing up for a holiday or some family event (or much needed vacation) for the love of all things holy schedule some time off. Let your clients know ahead of time so you can plan ahead.

Action time: Open up your calendar and schedule in time off when you know you’re going to need it.

While you’re at it make sure you’ve automated your business so that things run as they should while you’re away.  I wrote a blog post about how you can automate your business. Work smarter, not harder.

What holidays/personal plans are creeping up for you? Let me know below in the comments and tell me how you’re going to plan ahead so you can enjoy your time away. We all need it.

Rock on,

Reese
